Sunward
They sing the sun up over the Palace — strictly for the gentle hours.
Sunward are Joy and Neville, two voices from up on Gipsy Hill, the ridge above Crystal Palace where you can watch the sun come up over the whole of London. Joy sings like the curtains just opened; Neville sits soft and low underneath her line, and they finish each other's phrases. Winsome's melodica and flute are the birdsong of the band; Errol keeps the one-drop soft and rolling. Nobody in the room ever raises their voice.
It's gentle sunshine roots for the hour before the day has decided what it's going to be — a held Rhodes chord and a slow rise, a bird on the wire, a proper pot of tea made in no hurry, curtains opened on gold. Warmth as gratitude, never as sermon. Put them on before the kettle's boiled.
